Boston Terriers, a bull and terrier cross, were meant to be tough, trouble-free dogs that combine the strength, tenacity, and sturdiness of the old time bulldog with the agility and spark of the terrier. A good Boston should have the stamina and conformation to be able to join its owner in the fun of obedience, agility, jogging, playing ball, and frisbee. They should be able to do all these things and more without the need for costly surgical intervention.

These short-faced dogs may have breathing difficulties when stressed by exertion in hot or cold weather and can overheat if they are pushed too hard. They may also snore or drool. Whelping is often difficult as the pelvis is narrow and the large headed pups are often delivered by cesarean section. Heart and skin tumors are common problems in this breed. The prominent eyes are prone to injury. Some badly bred Boston Terriers may have a bone defect in the skull that stunts brain growth, resulting in a retarded dog. Boston Terriers are good for apartment as well as country living. They are relatively inactive indoors, but do require a yard. Boston Terriers are sensitive to weather extremes.

Boston Terriers Puppies - Boston Terriers are compact dogs with a short muzzle, docked tail, erect ears, and a smooth coat that can be of brindle, white, black, or brown color, or mixed. The breed is intelligent and strong-willed. It moves gently and easily.
According to the official AKC standard, the Boston Terrier should weigh from 15 to 25 pounds. The dog should be overall balanced and should not appear coarse. Boston Terriers have a square head, large rounded eyes that have an alert expression, and small erect ears. The ears are usually cropped. However, uncropped ears are also possible.

Actually, the Boston Terrier was not the only breed used in pit fighting. As a matter of fact, many dogs originally were used for these purposes. The Boston Terrier was one of them. The Boston Terrier had a number of features that distinguished him from other dogs.
The dog, that went down in history as the forefather of all modern Boston Terriers, weighed about 32 pounds and was of dark brindle with some white markings. The dog had a square head and almost flat mouth. A crossbreeding with a smaller Bull-type female resulted in a litter that later became the foundation stock of many breeding lines. The Boston Terrier of that time was often referred to as "stableman's dog" or "barber's dog".
